About Garden Creations
When I was a teenager, I became fascinated with plants — how they grow, why they grow, and the incredible ways they adapt. I first fell in love with vegetable gardens thanks to a childhood friend who had started one in his parents’ backyard. He paid such close attention to every detail: the soil, the plant varieties, the purpose of each harvest, and more. His dedication inspired me to study horticulture, both in college and on my own.
I wanted to understand plants from the ground up, so I dove into books that explained what happens in the soil, how plants interact with it, and the vast ecosystem they rely on to thrive — known as the Soil Food Web. Once I understood the foundation of plant life, soil, my world opened up even more during my years at the San Diego Botanic Garden in Encinitas, CA. There, I discovered the incredible diversity of plants from around the world and the many types of gardens that can flourish here in California.
From African gardens filled with cycads, succulents, caudiciform plants, and striking (and sometimes toxic) euphorbias, to hanging orchid gardens where plants cling to tree branches with their roots exposed — I gained a deep understanding of the unique horticultural needs of countless species. Yet certain fundamentals always remained true: water, soil, and light. If I got those right, I knew I could grow just about anything in California.
